1893 Fortune Teller “La Diseuse De Bonaventure”

By bubblescountNo Comments

This statue was originally exhibited and purchased at the Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893 which celebrated the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage. It was eventually owned by William Anastos who used it as part of the décor at the Cairo Supper Club located at 4015 N. Sheridan Rd. in Chicago. The Cairo, which opened in 1949, was a popular Chicago night spot that featured top name live entertainment. On May 11, 1964 the club was firebombed as part of the Chicago mob’s control of the Chicago restaurant & bar industry. There was extensive damage to the club and it never reopened. The statue suffered damage to the table legs but was salvaged from the debris. The legs were repaired and Anastos eventually sold the statue to a suburban antique dealer who has had it in his possession for over 50 years. In overall very good condition with the exception of the repaired legs. A unique piece of Chicago history.
